Othello Pi
The objective was to take a paper product container, like take-out boxes, and turn them into a secondary product. I wanted something that could be transformed into a board game, so I looked to large takeout containers, like pizza boxes, for inspiration. Since I’m limited to a 23 x 29 in. Bristol board, I need the design to be:
- Foldable using tabs, no glue or tape required
- Maximum space for a board base and game pieces
The final product transforms from a pie box to an 8 by 8 grid with 64 pieces, perfect for games like Othello or Checkers. It’s easily assembled with tabs, and supports pies up to 9 in. wide. I used different settings on a laser cutter to cut out the unfolded box, then short circular cuts to pop out game pieces from the lid.
Early ideas included turning a McDonalds french fry container into a phone stand, and using rectangular cardboard take out containers that turn into Yahtzee dice.
